What to know: Apple Watch only works with an iPhone. If you use Android, it is not an option.
About health readings
Many watches at every price now list heart rate, blood oxygen, sleep scores and sometimes blood pressure. A few things to keep in mind:
- They are estimates. A wrist sensor reads light through the skin, so a loose strap, tattoos, cold hands or movement can change the result.
- Trends are more useful than single numbers. A watch is good at showing whether your sleep or resting heart rate is changing over weeks.
- Do not use a watch to diagnose anything. If a reading worries you, see a doctor and use a proper medical device.
Spotting a copy Apple Watch
Copies of Apple Watch, often sold as "Ultra" or "Series" style watches, are easy to find for a few thousand rupees. Before you pay for a real one:
- Pair it with an iPhone using Apple's Watch app. A copy uses a different app or Bluetooth pairing.
- Check the serial number in the Watch app and compare it with the box.
- Look at the price. A real Apple Watch SE 3 cost about Rs 82,999 or more when we checked.
- Ask for a receipt with the serial number and the warranty terms.
How to choose
- Check your phone. Apple Watch needs an iPhone. Most other watches work with both, but features can differ.
- Decide what you need. For notifications and steps, a local watch or a band is enough. For workouts and better sensors, look at bands and Huawei. For apps and the iPhone, Apple Watch.
- Battery life. Compare the battery figures the brand gives. Bands usually last longer between charges than full smart watches.
- Warranty. Ask where to claim it. Local brands often have their own service.
- Watch for copies. "Ultra" style copies of Apple Watch are common. A real Apple Watch pairs only with an iPhone through the Watch app, and costs far more than a copy.
Buying tips
- Compare prices at two or three shops, because the same watch can differ by several thousand rupees.
- Check the strap size and type before you pay.
- For Apple Watch, ask whether it is a local warranty unit.
- Keep the box and receipt for warranty claims.
