Fake PTA Tax Notices: How to Tell a Real One

A fake PTA tax notice about instalments went viral in July 2026. How to check any PTA tax notice against official PTA and FBR sources before you act on it.

In short

  • In early July 2026, a notice saying PTA had launched tax instalments spread on WhatsApp and Facebook. On 2 July 2026, PTA called it false.
  • PTA does not set or collect phone tax. FBR does. Any "PTA" notice that announces a new tax rate, discount or payment plan is a warning sign.
  • Real PTA notices appear on pta.gov.pk (press releases) and its verified social accounts. Tax rules come from FBR.
  • Never pay phone tax through a link, a person or a wallet number in a message. The real payment goes through a PSID that DIRBS creates, paid at a bank or in your banking app.

Fake notices about phone tax spread fast in Pakistan because so many people want relief from the tax. This post explains what happened with the instalment notice in July 2026, and gives a short checklist to tell a real notice from a fake one.

What the fake notice said

In early July 2026, an image styled as a PTA notification circulated on WhatsApp and Facebook. It claimed that PTA had announced a new scheme under which mobile device taxes could be paid in instalments through DIRBS.

PTA issued a public advisory on 2 July 2026. As reported by PhoneWorld, PTA said:

  • the notification was false and misleading
  • it had issued no such notice
  • it had no power to create such a scheme, because tax on mobile devices is FBR's responsibility, not PTA's

PTA asked people not to share or rely on unverified posts, and to get information only from its official website and verified social media accounts.

Why it confused so many people

The fake notice landed at a confusing time. A few weeks earlier, in June 2026, news reports said the budget for 2026-27 would allow tax on imported phones to be paid in instalments. That part was real. The Finance Act 2026 included a provision for it from 1 July 2026.

But a law that allows instalments is not the same as a working system. ProPakistani reported on 23 August 2026 that the procedure still had not been set out, and that the number of instalments, how to apply and how to pay were all still missing. So a notice claiming DIRBS was already taking instalments was false, even though the idea behind it was real.

Our guide to paying PTA tax in instalments tracks what has actually been announced.

How to check if a PTA tax notice is real

Go through these checks before you share a notice or act on it.

1. Is it about tax rates or payment plans?

PTA registers and blocks phones through DIRBS. FBR sets and collects the tax. A PTA official said this again in August 2026. A notice "from PTA" that announces a new tax rate, a discount, an amnesty or an instalment plan is very likely fake. Real tax changes come from FBR, usually through the federal budget or an FBR notice.

2. Can you find it on the official website?

Open pta.gov.pk yourself, by typing it, not by tapping a link in the message. Look under Press Releases. If the notice is not there, treat it as unconfirmed. For tax, check FBR's Mobile Devices Regularization page on fbr.gov.pk.

3. Is it on PTA's verified accounts?

PTA links its official Facebook, X, Instagram and YouTube accounts from the footer of its homepage. Use those links rather than searching on social media, where copycat pages exist.

4. Check the web address

Official PTA addresses end in .gov.pk: pta.gov.pk for the authority and dirbs.pta.gov.pk for device registration. FBR is fbr.gov.pk. A link that ends in anything else, or adds extra words to these names, is not official.

5. Does it ask for money or personal details?

Real phone tax is paid through a payment slip ID (PSID) that DIRBS creates after you enter your IMEI and passport or CNIC. According to FBR's procedure, you pay the PSID through online banking, mobile banking, an ATM or a bank branch. No one from PTA will ask you to send money to a mobile wallet, a personal account or an agent. No one needs your bank PIN or one-time code.

6. Does it push you to act fast?

Messages that say "last date today" or "your phone will be blocked in 24 hours unless you pay here" are a common pressure trick. Check the status of your phone yourself on the DIRBS website or by SMS to 8484. See how to check PTA status by IMEI.

Other messages that follow the same pattern

The instalment notice is one example. Similar messages appear every few months, and they tend to share the same features:

  • "Register your IMEI here or your phone will be blocked", with a link that is not on pta.gov.pk or dirbs.pta.gov.pk.
  • "PTA tax has been reduced, pay the new amount today", often with a mobile wallet number for payment.
  • "Free PTA approval for overseas Pakistanis", asking for a copy of your passport or CNIC.
  • A screenshot of a "notification" with no date or reference number, shared in a group without a link.

Any one of these is a reason to stop and check the official website yourself. When in doubt, do nothing until you have checked.

If you already shared or acted on a fake notice

  • Delete the forward and tell the group it was fake. Link to PTA's site rather than to a screenshot.
  • If you paid money through a link or to a person, contact your bank straight away.
  • If you shared your CNIC, bank details or one-time code, tell your bank and change any passwords you used.
  • Check your phone's real status in DIRBS so you know where you actually stand.

Questions people ask

Is the PTA tax instalment notification real?

The one that spread on WhatsApp and Facebook in early July 2026 was not. PTA called it false and misleading in an advisory on 2 July 2026. Separately, the Finance Act 2026 does allow tax instalments, but the procedure had not been announced when we last checked.

What is the official PTA website?

PTA's website is pta.gov.pk, and its device registration system is dirbs.pta.gov.pk. Both end in .gov.pk. PTA links its official Facebook, X, Instagram and YouTube accounts from its homepage.

Does PTA collect mobile tax?

No. FBR sets and collects the tax on imported phones. PTA runs DIRBS, which registers and blocks phones. A notice from PTA announcing a new tax rate or discount should make you suspicious.

How do I report a fake PTA message?

Do not forward it. PTA runs a complaint system at complaint.pta.gov.pk. If someone asked you for money or personal details, you can also report it to your bank and to the cyber crime authorities.
